Sunday Notes – 15/3/15

This week has admittedly been more chilled. On repeat was this from Elvis Depressedly – the first song from the soon to be released album New Alhambra, the long-awaited follow up to 2013’s Holo Pleasures. The LP is set to have a “spring 2015” release via Orchid Tapes and Run For Cover, so I whole-heartedly look forward to spinning that at some point in the near future.

I’m doing tour prep at the moment in anticipation of the week ahead. It’s mostly spoken word gigs. The last date is in Portsmouth where I’m on a bill with loads of great bands including Richa and Hindsights. The show there is promoted by James Stelzer, who is in a band called Scared of Everything. If you haven’t heard them before, you should give them a listen. Scared of Everything put out a gutsy EP a few months ago; mixing lyrical content about regret and misery through spoken word to match a relentless overall sound.

Additional listening is from Norwich duo Algae Bloom – whose Bandcamp is full of snaps of fearless skramz. Tape is via Wolf Town (I’m getting used to saying that pretty much every week on this blog, they are solid). Norwich is full of gems, and every time I go I seem to find out about another band, a sign of a healthy DIY scene.

Speaking of which, last night I saw Ross Sutherland perform his one man show Stand-By for Tape Back Up – an audio visual spoken word piece about his relationship with his grandfather and the mourning after his death. The narrative is based around an old video tape which is looped and repeated several times, Ross delivers stories over this footage. It looks a bit like this.

Recommended show for this week is the indiepop all dayer in Leicester, the line up is ace and I thought I’d offer some balance after all of the emo stuff I just mentioned. Firebug, 21st March, 3pm.

Ps – here is a video I put together from the Furrow tour.
