Live Review: Flogging Molly & Beans on Toast (Leeds, 12/08/15)

Flogging Molly kicked off their short UK run around their appearance at Boomtown with a show at Leeds University.

Beans on Toast kicked things off with his “drunk folk” songs, immediately setting the tone for the evening as he had the entire crowd laughing, singing and occasionally making chicken noises. His song “I’m Going to Kill David Cameron” was a particular highlight as he announced that it would be career suicide if he actually recorded and released it.

Soon after Flogging Molly took the stage and launched straight into “The Likes of You Again” and “Swagger”. A mosh pit immediately opened and the entire crowd seemed to be off their feet and shouting along. This built and built until the opening banjo of “Drunken Lullabies” rang out and the crowd immediately went frantic.

The band have a stage presence which is unmatched, as vocalist Dave King struts around the stage and banters between songs with audience members. Each band member is on point, and never sloppy.

As the band closed their set with the one-two punch of “What’s Left of the Flag” and “The Seven Deadly Sins”, the sound blew, right at the end of the last song – which almost felt like it was on purpose. Luckily the power returned after the crowd let a performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody” before King made it back up to the stage to join in.

Flogging Molly finished with the heartbreaking “If I Ever Leave this World Alive”, and showed everyone their main talent, which is walking a fine line between fun musicianship and heartfelt lyrics.
